Complete Your Duke of Edinburgh Award Through Archery
Looking for a rewarding and enjoyable way to complete your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award? At Bowmen of Danesfield, we offer a structured archery programme that can be used towards the Physical, Skills, or Volunteering sections of the DofE Award.
Whether you are completely new to archery, have tried it before, or are already shooting regularly, we can help you develop a programme that meets the requirements of your chosen award level while introducing you to one of the oldest and most rewarding sports in the world.
Archery is a unique activity that combines physical ability, mental focus, discipline, patience, and determination. It offers clear opportunities for personal development and provides measurable progress throughout your DofE journey. Most importantly, it is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all abilities and experience levels.
At Bowmen of Danesfield, participants benefit from a friendly and supportive club environment, access to experienced archers and coaches, and a clear pathway for developing their skills while working towards their award.
Why Choose Archery for Your DofE?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is designed to encourage young people to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and demonstrate commitment over a sustained period of time. Archery fits these objectives exceptionally well.
Unlike many activities where progress can be difficult to measure, archery provides clear evidence of improvement. Participants can track their development through increased accuracy, improved technique, greater consistency, enhanced understanding of equipment, and growing confidence on the shooting line.
Archery also develops a wide range of transferable skills. Regular participation encourages concentration, self-discipline, resilience, problem-solving, and goal setting. Many participants find that the focus required in archery has a positive impact on other areas of their lives, including education, work, and personal development.
For some, archery becomes a lifelong hobby. For others, it provides an opportunity to challenge themselves, meet new people, and achieve a nationally recognised award. Whatever your motivation, archery offers an enjoyable and rewarding route through the DofE programme.
How the Programme Works
Our DofE programme is designed to be straightforward, supportive, and flexible.
If you are completely new to archery, your journey will begin with a beginner course. This provides a safe introduction to the sport and covers essential topics such as range safety, shooting technique, equipment use, and shooting etiquette.
Once the beginner course has been completed, participants are required to become members of Bowmen of Danesfield. Membership is an important part of the programme as it provides access to regular shooting sessions, coaching support, insurance cover, and the wider club community.
Following membership, participants attend regular club sessions throughout the duration of their DofE programme. During this time, they work towards agreed goals and record their progress. We encourage participants to keep notes of their achievements, challenges, and development, helping to create a clear record of their journey.
At the end of the programme, we review the participant’s progress and provide the appropriate support and assessment documentation required for their DofE Award.
Which DofE Sections Can Archery Be Used For?
Physical Section
Archery is most commonly used for the Physical section of the DofE Award.
Although often overlooked as a physical activity, archery requires strength, stamina, coordination, and control. Repeatedly drawing and holding a bow develops upper body strength and endurance, while maintaining consistent shooting form requires balance, concentration, and body awareness.
Participants completing the Physical section are expected to demonstrate commitment and improvement over the required period. Progress may be shown through improved scores, increased shooting distances, enhanced technique, or greater consistency and confidence.
Archery is suitable for Bronze, Silver, and Gold participants and can be adapted to suit complete beginners as well as more experienced archers.
Skills Section
Archery can also be used as a Skills activity for participants who wish to focus on developing their knowledge and understanding of the sport.
This may include learning about different bow styles, shooting techniques, competition formats, scoring systems, equipment maintenance, and range procedures. More experienced archers may choose to explore coaching, judging, tournament organisation, or advanced equipment setup.
A personalised development plan can be created to ensure the activity meets the requirements of the Skills section while remaining enjoyable and relevant to the participant’s interests.
Volunteering Section
Archery also offers opportunities for participants completing the Volunteering section.
Volunteers may assist with beginner sessions, help set up and dismantle ranges, support club events, assist with equipment maintenance, contribute to publicity and communications, or provide administrative support.
Volunteering through the club allows participants to give something back to their local community while developing valuable leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

Creating Your Personal Programme
No two Duke of Edinburgh participants are the same. The examples above are intended to provide guidance and inspiration, but each participant’s programme will be tailored to their experience, interests, and award requirements.
At Bowmen of Danesfield, we work closely with participants to create a structured and achievable plan that satisfies the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award while ensuring that the experience remains enjoyable, rewarding, and memorable.
Time Commitment
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award requires participants to demonstrate sustained commitment over a period of time.
Typical durations are:
Bronze Award – 3 months
Silver Award – 3 or 6 months
Gold Award – 6 or 12 months
Participants are generally expected to average around one hour per week, although flexibility may be possible depending on individual circumstances and the nature of the activity being undertaken.
We are happy to discuss individual requirements and work with participants and DofE leaders to ensure a suitable programme is established.
Membership Requirement
To take part in the Bowmen of Danesfield DofE programme, participants must become members of the club following completion of the beginner course.
Membership provides access to regular shooting sessions, coaching support, club facilities, and insurance cover. It also enables participants to become fully involved in club life, helping them gain the greatest possible benefit from their DofE experience.
Many participants who initially join for their DofE Award continue shooting long after completing their programme and become active members of the club.
What Will You Gain?
Completing your DofE through archery offers far more than simply fulfilling the requirements of an award.
Participants often develop:
• Increased confidence
• Improved concentration and focus
• Greater self-discipline
• Enhanced resilience and determination
• Better coordination and physical control

• A lifelong sporting skill
Many participants discover a passion for archery that continues well beyond the completion of their DofE Award.
