The Windsor Round
Windsor Round
What is the Windsor Round?
The Windsor Round is a classic outdoor archery round recognised by Archery GB.
It offers a structured and enjoyable challenge for archers of all levels, and is especially popular in club settings and local competitions.
Its progressive distance format and moderate arrow count strike a balance between skill development and accessible competition.
Format of the Windsor Round
In the standard Windsor Round, archers shoot:
- 36 arrows (3 dozen) at 60 yards
- 36 arrows (3 dozen) at 50 yards
- 36 arrows (3 dozen) at 40 yards
This totals 108 arrows per round. The target face used is the standard 122 cm target with a five-zone scoring system:
- Gold (Inner & Outer) – 9 points
- Red – 7 points
- Blue – 5 points
- Black – 3 points
- White – 1 point
For more information on scoring, check out the Archery Scoresheet.
Variations of the Windsor Round
To accommodate different age groups and ability levels, several Windsor variants adjust the distances while maintaining the structure of three dozen arrows at each of three distances:
- Windsor – 60, 50, 40 yards
- Windsor 50– 50, 40, 30 yards
- Windsor 40– 40, 30, 20 yards
- Windsor 30– 30, 20, 10 yards
Each variant continues with 36 arrows at each distance, a total of 108 arrows, allowing for consistent scoring and performance tracking across formats.
Why Shoot a Windsor Round?
- Structured Challenge – With three distinct distances, archers must adapt and refine their technique throughout the round.
- Higher Arrow Count – Shooting 108 arrows provides extended practice and a robust test of consistency and stamina.
- Flexible for All Ages – Multiple variants make it ideal for juniors and beginners without sacrificing competitive integrity.
- Classification and Handicap – The round qualifies for classification and handicap tracking under Archery GB.
Equipment Considerations
All bow styles are welcome in the Windsor Round, including recurve, compound, barebow, and longbow.
History
The first documented Windsor round event in archery was in 1960 at the Summer Paralympics in Rome. Great Britain secured two silvers and a bronze
